“Brain dump” overcomes perfection paralysis

March 5, 2015 by Marte Cliff

Does “Perfection Paralysis”
keep you from writing?
Are you having trouble filling your website and your blog with good content because you just can’t seem write words that meet your own standaards?
There’s a simple cause and a simple solution:
You are probably trying to get each sentence right as you write it.
So… you write, delete, write again, delete again – and on and on.
You won’t get far that way, so use this solution:
Do a “brain dump.”
Whatever your thoughts on the topic, just get them out there in the daylight where you can examine them.
Don’t worry about using proper grammar. Don’t worry if your ideas are in logical order. Don’t worry if you misplace a modifier. Don’t stop to check your spelling.
Just write it. All of it.
Go as fast as you can and don’t stop to decide whether a point is relevant.
Once you’ve finished, you can use the cut and paste functions on your computer to put the thoughts in proper order. You can also cut out sentences or paragraphs that aren’t necessary.
Then you can begin to edit and refine the presentation.
If you have trouble deciding on a lead-in or a title for an article.
Try my solution: Start in the middle and come back to it later.
By the time I finish writing an article, my focus has often changed from the original idea – so any lead in I might have written wouldn’t fit anyway.
